Irreplaceable: Paintings by Sally Kauffman
March 25 – June 11, 2023
Workhouse Center for the Arts – McGuireWoods Gallery
Irreplaceable is an exhibit of abstract yet allusory paintings by DC area artist, Sally Kauffman. In her most recent series, she turns her eye to the plight of endangered and extinct species. Her high contrast color palettes and adventurous brushwork are reminiscent of the abstract expressionistic movement of the 20th Century. Yet her goal to increase awareness of the species represented in her work calls to mind Romanticism, a late 18th century artistic and intellectual movement that promoted the power of the creativity and the arts to raise awareness and thus transform circumstance
Score: Mixed Media by Joan Dreyer

Score explores 20 years of the work of Virginia-based mixed media artist, Joan Dreyer. While developing her MFA thesis at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA, Joan began taking tools, techniques and imagery that have been historically considered “women’s work” and transforming them into innovative, contemporary art that is responsive to the tone and tensions of our times. Created by combining fiber techniques with unexpected materials like X-rays, her work is a subtle art that asks questions about life, loss, symbolism, and the impact of war.

The Sacred in the Modern, The Art of Helen Schrider Higgins (Curatorial Project)
May Gallery, Mullen Library, Catholic University of America, Washington DC
My mother, Helen Schrider Higgins was the first women accepted to the MFA Sculpture program at Catholic University. She was awarded her MFA in 1955. This exhibition was a six month collaboration with the Mullen Library of Catholic University. In my research, I delved into the impact of the post Wold War II environment on women who had experienced a loosening of strict social norms during the war as well as the unusual confluence of modernist influences at Catholic University’s art department during this period. This opportunity was supported by the staff of the Mullen Library and many members of my family as well as the an artist who knew my mother. I thank them for their support. My mother passed away in late December of 2022 at 92. While she was not able to attend the exhibit, she was aware of our work and was involved with early discussions before her decline. There is a virtual exhibit created by the Library that can be accessed HERE.
